Located in the northeastern corner of Miami-Dade County, Sunny Isles Beach is a picturesque seaside community located on a barrier island situated on a semi-tropical ridge between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway.
The city covers approximately 1.78 square miles and is home to more than 22,000 residents – the 15th most populous municipality out of the 34 within the county. The city was officially incorporated in 1997 and is operated under a mayor-commission-manager type of government.
Sunny Beach Isles is divided into four districts, each one with a commissioner elected to serve a four-year term.
Living in Sunny Isles Beach
The city of Sunny Isles Beach started out as a 2.26 square mile development designed to serve as a tourist resort. It was first purchased in 1920 by Harvey B. Graves, who labeled it as “The Venice of America.”
The resort became accessible from Miami Beach in 1925, after the completion of the Haulover Bridge. This drew more attention to the area, attracting several developers who widened the streams, dug inlets and canals, and built islands and peninsulas for waterfront properties along Biscayne Bay.
Sunny Isles was developed gradually, and the first single-family homes were built in the Golden Shores area during the 1950s. During this period, around 30 motels were established along Collins Avenue, including the famous Ocean Palm, which was the country’s first two-story motel. This was the start of “Motel Row,” which attracted more and more tourists and vacationers to the area.
Today, Sunny Isles Beach remains one of South Florida’ best vacation destinations. Even with luxurious hotels and posh apartment towers joining the colorful 50s motels and beachfront hotels, the city’s laid-back charm and relaxing resort town vibe has remained intact. Here, locals and visitors get to savor beautiful sunrises and sunsets, enjoy a vast array of recreational activities, and spend time discovering truly incredible destinations.
