Miami Beach is a seaside resort city located between the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, which separates it from the Miami mainland. Part of Miami-Dade County, the coastal community is perched on a combination of man-made and natural barrier islands.
Miami Beach is home to the commercial center of South Florida, which is formed collectively by downtown Miami, the Port of Miami, and the South Beach neighborhood. The entire city encompasses approximately seven square miles and is currently home to more than 91,000 residents.
The city is home to numerous beach resorts and is considered one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It boasts an extensive plethora of attractions, including over seven miles of sun-soaked beaches, the world-famous Art Deco Historic District, fantastic golf courses, first-class shopping, dining, and nightlife destinations, and so much more.
Living in Miami Beach
Miami Beach started out as a 165-acre plot of land used mainly for planting coconut trees and harvesting coconuts. It was purchased by father and son Henry and Charles Lum from the federal government in 1870, buying the land for 25 cents per acre. After their coconut plantation turned out to be a failed venture, Henry and Charles relinquished control and sold the land to John S. Collins and Thomas Pancoast.
In 1913, John Collins partnered with Indianapolis entrepreneur Carl Fisher, who reached success through the sale of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Presto-o-Lite Corporation. Fisher’s original plan was to use the area’s beachfront land for agriculture, before encountering some difficulties. He decided instead to create plans to develop the mangrove barrier island into an oceanfront paradise, which eventually became known as Miami Beach.
The Town of Miami Beach was officially chartered on March 26, 1915, and was incorporated as a city in 1917.
Today, Miami Beach is known as one of the best vacation destinations in the world. While many visitors head to Miami Beach to enjoy its beaches, there’s also a vast array of arts and culture venues, scenic parks and golf courses, superb nightlife spots, and world-class shopping, dining, and entertainment destinations to discover.
